About The Leaf Almanac

The Leaf Almanac exists because most houseplant advice online falls into two piles: vague reassurance ("just don't overwater!") or intimidating jargon aimed at collectors with greenhouses. Neither helps the person standing over a drooping pothos at 9 p.m., wondering if they've killed it.

We write for that person. Our guides are plain, specific, and built around what actually happens on a windowsill — not what happens in a controlled nursery.

#Who writes this

The Leaf Almanac is produced by a small editorial team of long-time indoor growers. Between us we've kept plants alive (and, honestly, killed a few) across apartments with north-facing windows, radiators that cook the air all winter, and cats who treat every new fern as a salad bar. That range matters: the reason one watering schedule works for your neighbour and not for you usually comes down to light, airflow, and pot size — the unglamorous stuff we spend most of our time on.

We are not botanists with letters after our names, and we don't pretend to be. What we offer is tested, repeatable experience, cross-checked against reputable horticultural sources and university extension programs before it goes live. Where the science is genuinely unsettled, we say so.

#How we test our advice

• We grow the plants we write about. Care sheets come from keeping the actual species through at least one full seasonal cycle, not from paraphrasing other blogs.
• We check our claims. Numbers on light levels, watering intervals, and toxicity are verified against horticultural references and poison-control databases, then written in plain language.
• We update. Plant care isn't static — our understanding of a species changes, and so do the products people use. Every guide carries a "last updated" date, and we revisit the popular ones regularly.
• We separate fact from preference. When something is our opinion (we think terracotta beats plastic for most people), we frame it as opinion.

#What we don't do

We don't publish guesswork dressed up as certainty, we don't recommend products we wouldn't use ourselves, and we don't treat plants as disposable décor. A houseplant is a living thing on a slow clock; good care is mostly patience plus a few correct decisions.
